Yes. South Blooming Grove Fire Department, Independence Fire Company is a 100% volunteer organization. Our members volunteer their time to train, respond to emergencies, maintain equipment and apparatus, participate in community events, and help protect the residents and visitors we serve.

Independence Fire Company has more than 100 members, with more than 30 active volunteer firefighters regularly responding to emergency calls. Like volunteer fire departments throughout New York State, we are always looking for additional members who are willing to train and serve their community.

The South Blooming Grove Fire District provides fire protection and emergency response services to the district, including the Village of South Blooming Grove and portions of the Town of Blooming Grove in Orange County, New York.

The South Blooming Grove Fire Department also works closely with neighboring fire departments and emergency services through mutual aid agreements. This allows departments to assist one another when additional personnel, apparatus or specialized resources are needed.

South Blooming Grove Fire District throughout the year trains with the neighboring departments that we also respond to mutual aid calls with. These departments include but not limited to; Kiryas Joel (dept. 59), Salisbury Mills (dept. 39), and Washingtonville (dept 49).

The South Blooming Grove organization is made up of three connected entities, each with a different responsibility

South Blooming Grove Fire District:

The Fire District is the governing and administrative body. The Board of Fire Commissioners is responsible for the district’s budget, finances, property, equipment, policies and overall administration.

South Blooming Grove Fire Department:

The Fire Department’s Chief Officers oversee emergency operations and provide command at emergency scenes within the district.

Independence Fire Company:

Independence Fire Company is the volunteer company made up of firefighters and company officers who train, respond to emergencies, maintain equipment and apparatus, and support the department’s mission.

Together, these entities work to provide fire protection and emergency services to the community.

South Blooming Grove Fire Department participates in the Orange County emergency mutual aid system, allowing neighboring departments to assist one another when additional resources are needed.

Depending on the type and location of an emergency, mutual aid may involve departments from communities including Washingtonville, Salisbury Mills, Kiryas Joel, Monroe, Chester, Woodbury, Vails Gate, Goshen, Walden, New Windsor and other surrounding communities.

Mutual aid is an important part of emergency response and helps ensure that additional trained personnel and apparatus can be available when an incident requires more resources.

The South Blooming Grove Fire Department is committed to fire prevention, public education and community safety.

Yes. The South Blooming Grove Fire Department provides the necessary turnout gear and equipment required for members to perform their assigned firefighting duties.

Members are expected to report any issues with their equipment to a line officer or chief and complete the training required to use it safely.

Absolutely. Our firefighters are volunteers who have jobs, families and responsibilities of their own.

We understand that members cannot always be available for every emergency call. What matters is being willing to contribute your time when you are available and participating in the training and activities required for your role.

Many of our members balance careers and family life with their commitment to the fire department.

The time commitment varies depending on your role, availability, training and level of involvement.
